“When women are effectively trained and empowered, the possibilities for lasting community impact are endless. Many of our members have leveraged their League experience in ways that stretch beyond our organization’s walls – founding new community programs, serving on leading nonprofit boards and assuming significant civic leadership roles,” said JLT President Aileen Meyer.

Junior League of Toledo is an organization welcoming of all women who have a desire to put their greatest strengths to use for the betterment of our community while at the same time developing new skills and leadership competencies. Through the membership experience women gain exposure and understanding about leading community issues and have the opportunity to volunteer their time, expertise and skills to address these issues.

The Junior League of Toledo has several new projects it will be working on throughout 2010 and 2011. One project is employment facilitation for autistic adults, which addresses the emerging need for sheltered employment for autistic adults. This project involves JLT developing a business plan for a Bittersweet Farms product development program and providing leadership during the start-up and stabilization of the program. JLT will also be working on a project called Community of Siblings- Respite Care. That project entails partnering with Sunshine Communities, Inc. to provide parents of special needs children with a few child-free hours one day per month at an affordable rate. During that time, the disabled children and their non-disabled sibling(s) will attend a support session that includes a range of activities coordinated by JLT.

Thanks to the generous funding of O-I Charities Foundation, JLT will once again be hosting its hugely successful Kids in the Kitchen event on October 16, 2010 at the SeaGate Convention Centre. It will also expand the one-day expo to include other activities throughout the year. The goal of the Kids in the Kitchen initiative is to help combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and the associated health concerns. All Kids in the Kitchen events and activities will focus on educating children and their parents about nutrition and fitness, and informing them about the numerous related community resources that are available.

The Junior League of Toledo is always seeking new members of diverse professional and personal backgrounds who are interested in community involvement and would like to develop their personal and professional skills.
